Mates -- University of Michigan location based social networking system

Checkmates -- a mobile friend finder prototype
I just met a couple of minutes ago Frergus Burns from Nooked. He is here in Zaragoza with 30 other innovative companines for the innovate 06 convention. Talking about Mobile social software with location based approach, he mentionned Chad dickerson blog telling about the service Checkmates.
Checkmate is a prototype for telling your friends where you are and seeing where they are on a map (i.e. check your mates) — on your phone. From what I read It wasn’t even close to working at the end of their last Hack Day, but it is said to be working now. This service is US only and I wonder if anyone could tell me more about it !
